Anti-Rex

As a prompt to get back into posting regularly, here's a warm up doodle for the day ahead. Got some dinosaur and Tuatara commissions to get done, so this is to get me into the paleo-art mindset.

Ye Olde Imagery Menagerie, closed for business

Though the gallery closed on xmas eve, I've officially ended the lease and shipped out. A few parting shots. It's been great having a public space to show my tack, and talk crap. Now it's time to knuckle down on full time freelance and dig out some long forgotten personal projects (and get my weekends back after three years). I'm sure there'll be a Dittybox shop V.02 at some point in the near future, but for now I'm displaying recent paintings at Floyds cafe, 130 The Parade, Island Bay, Wellington. Prints, tea towels, paintings etc will also soon be available via a relaunched website at dittybox.co.nz. for commissions, I'm still available via gavin@dittybox.co.nz

Dittybox Gallery has cast off, to amass more loot n' booty.

Dittybox, street-shop Version 1.0, is now closed for business. See you in the new year on the WORLD-WIDE-WEBSTERNET! New website, online shop, and commissioning services coming soon. In the meantime, contact me at gavin@dittybox.co.nz for any questions/enquiries.

Tuesday, 18 November 2014

For various reasons, all positive, Dittybox will be closing in the new year. That's the physical gallery, not the online presence. To celebrate the closing, I'm having an opening. New paintings, some old ones too, new prints, and a new Wellington map...

Godzilla's fungal infection

I haven't seen the new film yet, but saw a pudgy Godzilla doodle done by Greg Broadmore, and decided to do my own version. I figure those protruding growths are ascospores from a Cordyceps fungus, which invades a host's body and takes over it's tissue and brain. So really this is a fungus invading a port city, using Godzilla as a host vehicle. I'm guessing that is not what the film is about, but I have no idea. I'll find out this weekend.

Robusta Rhymes

Mystacina Robusta, or the New Zealand Greater Short-Tailed Bat. Done for Forest & Bird, for their Wild Things Kid's Conservation Club magazine. More of these sort of illos will be posted on my freelance blog... eyepoo.blogspot.co.nz

and a spot-the-difference version...

monster/pirate/wedding commission

Some progress shots from on an oil paint commission of Island Bay, during a pirateocalypse. Oil paint is damn messy and smelly. My baby daughter is forever going to associate turpentine with Daddy.

The first pic is a digital rough. The view (minus the fantasy bits) is from the clients' lounge window in Island Bay. Lucky landlubbers. Click them for a closer look if you want to see the niggly details.

Almost done. It'll have a few touchups and little additions once this layer's dried a bit.

Dogstar accidental exorcism

I was a background and design gimp on an animated tv show in Australia called Dogstar. I guess it's still in my system, as this unrelated image turned out unintentionally similar. I suppose it can be a tribute to Scott V, the director of the series.

Markers and digital.

Monster Fish Has Taste For Taputeranga

My choice Sis modeling the new Island Bay (So Sweet You Could Eat It Up) tee. Organic Cotton, comes in grey, mens and womens medium sizes.

Friday, 8 February 2013

This weekend is the beginning of the Island Bay Festival. To set it off, The Parade (the main street) residents and shops will have stalls and yard sales from 10am to 1.30, before the parade (an actual parade) passes through at about 2pm. At Dittybox a one-off Wishbone/Dittybox trike will be on display and raffled-off for Plunket. We also have new "I'm An Island Baby" Onesies, and adult "Island Bay, so sweet you could just eat it up!" Tees. And plenty of new art.

Island Baby

Lyla Morgana Mouldey joined us at 26 mins past midnight on the 5th of Dec, thanks to an odyssean effort from Rosie. 4.280 kgs. She poos, she sleeps, she stares, she feeds, cries a little, and does it all with the utmost levels of sophistication and cuteness.

Dittybox has been open limited hours over the last two weeks, thanks to my great gallery invigilators. But as of this Wednesday (19th Dec), we'll be back to regular hours.
11-5.30 Wed/Thur/Fr

Some stuff still in store...

Assorted bits and pieces currently in dittybox. Our baby is due this week, so I might not be in the gallery, but someone will be invigilating in my stead. I'll update the opening hours after I've conferred with my spawn. Click the pics if you want a closer look-see.

 Chrissy cards, handpainted.

"I'm An Island Baby" wee-tees and onesies. Some with squids/octopodes,
and some with little pics of the island.

My first left hand painting, from the week after tendon surgery.

 A smitten knight, left-handed too.

Some Octo-related things, also painted left handed.

Screenprinted, then hand coloured "Ventriloquist Rex".

Crushed can dude. This one sold to a cool 9 year old called Nikko.  But there's more.

A left-handed space station slash light house facility and assorted space-phenalia.

And the last piece done for my left hand show. 5 space wrecks.
